Or do they both have the same marketing team? Let's see.

-Grants up the wazoo.
-Tax payer funding (600K, a drop in the bucket), thank-you Congressman Farr.
-Many good folks that become members and pay dues.

So now we get sloganeering every time we pop on IA that is equivalent to how my local PBS station begs for money. Or used to twenty years ago when I still was a paying member and paid attention.
So things are tight at IA? Maybe prioritize? I loved my hat and swag, but maybe that ought not have been a line item?
Maybe, since my above example was a tiny slice of the budgetary pie chart, some tough choices need to be made. One less library to digitize this year? One less server, and load times may be a second or five slower? Is every employee necessary (gasp) or can benefits be slightly trimmed back for a year or two?

How many fish are you going to catch in the Donate on every page, like a Big Sister reminding you incessantly? Enough? If your projections are that rosy or your shortfall that small why bother (and it is) at all?

So an on-line PBS? Don't be that website IA. There are better solutions to be sure. And it looks desperate and tacky.

Really? I suppose you don't open doors for donors, eh?

;)

It is in keeping with your view that the decline of the Forum is just around the corner...

FWIW, I think places like this need all the support they can get, and anyway they want to approach it is fine by me. I have personally benefited by its existence directly/indirectly in so many ways that I could easily put a cash value on it of ~ $ 1.79.

JK; I'd say $10 a yr would be appropriate, IMHO.

No tote bag for you....

If this place needs cash, let them go about however. As someone who has to fundraise for nonprofits as a board member, I know what a chore it is in this economy.

Damn; ya, better up it to $25 in the hopes of a cool Forum theme t-shirt...?

XX-lg, for JOTS and me (er, each in his own, of course).

A lot of non-profit orgs run year-end fund drives. I don't have any problem with it. It's not like they're running ads before tracks on the play lists.

You have got to be kidding Micah, while you might not approve the method of fundraising chosen, for you to have the audacity that you have even the slightest idea of the complexities and costs of keeping this immense archive up and running is laughable.Telling these talented and intelligent people to prioritize is just fuckin' insulting,if I worked there and some blowhard at home on his computer started questioning cutting my benefits or if I might need to be trimmed (gasp) I would be beside myself. If that banner asking for donations is so disturbing, go to one of the many other free archives housing all the things this one does that don't have a banner, until then shut the fuck up.In the interest of full exposure I hate the banner also, but I am surely not going to bitch to the good people who provide me such a wonderful resource, and I am certainly not going to give them unsolicited, unnecessary and ignorant advice on how they should go about operating an archive this size since I know absolutely nothing about it,not unlike you who also knows nothing about it.

Just giving my opinion j, just as you did. I do know a thing or two about sales and marketing. One is that if you don't have enough bread in the breadbox, then you have to start making choices. We all do.
This choice, probably pretty far down on the, 'how do we generate more revenue meeting', I see as I've stated. Anyways, cold calling is rough trade. Maybe not 1 in 10,000, but it's not a pretty number.

I apologize for the harshness of my response, but your post just irked me,I don't see how anyone not intimately familiar with the particulars of this very complex situation would feel free to toss what could be nothing more than conjecture into the mix.

since 2004 i've spent more time on this website downloading and streaming audio than i have poking around the rest of the internet. i'm only too happy to pitch in a couple of dollars to keep it up and running for years to come.

thanks archive.org.

I doubt that the Donate banner at the top of the page inconveniences you in any way. You should be grateful that this place exists at all, and you should be down on your hands and knees worshiping this place since it's all free.

Yes some are quite obvious even to a MORON like me but there has got to be some more of us out ther who could use a little help, no alot of help. MAMU yes it's Me And My Uncle,I got that one but some are just head scratchers as they say down in the Osarks(not from ther just an example. Could you compile a list funny if you must but I need to get the meaning.
